  26. I've beta tested a number of products. It's not always fun.

  28. I came to desktop video from the real world of high priced
  29. pro toys. When it came time to try this stuff on affordable
  30. computers, the products were not there. When I found out
  31. about products in development, I called developers and 
  32. told them what I was doing and what I wanted. Sometimes
  33. that lead to offers to test.

  35. After buying products I usually give companies feedback.
  36. Sometimes that leads to offers to test. Especially if I give
  37. steady feedback over a number of months or years.

  39. Developers get lots of requests from people to be beta
  40. testers, but often it turns out the requests are from
  41. people who wanted free or cheap products. Developers
  42. do not like people who scam a free product and are 
  43. never heard from again. Enough people do this that 
  44. developers do not give most requests to "be a beta tester"
  45. a lot of credibility.

  47. OTOH they do need good beta testers.

  49. In my case, the credibility is in my knowledge of
  50. the industry and what is needed. I have a certain
  51. level of experience and a willingness to really try and
  52. to work with beta software (a dangerous way to live).
  53. And I have a real day to day need for these tools.

  55. I've spent years testing, suggesting and waiting for
  56. features to get correctly implemented. I've had the
  57. pleasure of watching  good suggestions being implemented,
  58. and the displeasure of watching companies who finally
  59. make good products change course and leave the market.

  61. I also routinely send suggestion letters to developers
  62. of products I use but am not beta testing. Sometimes
  63. that leads to an offer to test. Usually it doesn't. Either
  64. way my motivation is to improve the tools I use.

  66. I've done a lot of testing in the course of writing
  67. various manuals (I can't document it THAT way, 
  68. why don't you implement it THIS way instead?).  ;^)

  70. Doing beta testing correctly takes a lot of time. Make
  71. sure you have it before you try and become a beta tester.
  72. Don't try and test too many products at the same time.
  73. You won't do any of them justice.

  78. PS. It helps to be diplomatic when trashing a programmer's
  79. hard work. It takes a lot of hard work to implement a poor
  80. design and a lot of patience to get them to change it...
